Welcome to the Guardians CCG Page

This is a site dedicated to the Guardians collectible card game released by FPG in the mid '90s. This was a great game featuring beautiful artwork and a complex battle system. The game is now out of print and some cards are extremely difficult to find.

Here you will find alternate rules and game mods (including solo play), homebrew cards, and links to other Guardians sites.

Update 8-15-14

Hello everyone,

I needed a long break after designing that last set of cards. Little did I know how long that break would be, but I truly did need it. Unfortunately that break will need to last a little while longer, as I have some pressing personal issues to deal with over the next few weeks.

Expect an announcement soon on my next project, and thank you for your patience. I'm not sure I'll be designing anymore cards for a little while, but I do have some other things up my sleeve...

eBay News and Other News

Last week some Tweezles came up for auction on eBay and sold for staggering prices:

Tweezle the Sneaky: $424
Exploding Tweezle: $126
Cheesy Con Souvenir Tweezle:  $53

I would have loved to have that Tweezle the Sneaky, but the price was a little rich for me. I've also been in contact with Dave Genzler, the original Tweezle, about doing an interview. Hopefully he'll agree and drop some Guardians knowledge on us.

Currently on eBay I have several sealed boxes of Starter decks for sale. Normally I try to avoid any self-promotion here, but money's a little tight right now and I'm hoping some of you could use some starter decks. The link is here:

Cheers!

Big Push This Weekend

I'm making a big push to post between 10-15 Planar Conflict cards this weekend to try to speed up development. After sitting down and laying everything out, creating a database, and getting somewhat organized, I discovered Planar Conflict requires a total of 90 cards to be developed to be complete! And I'm only on card #38, not even halfway!

So look for lots more cards soon...maybe you'll even see some tonight... ;)

In a Funk...

I apologize for the lack of posts lately. Last month I lost my 12 year old Pomeranian, named Pixie, to kidney disease. My little Pixie had so much personality, and as a wee creature (she weighed 6 pounds), we shared a lot of laptime watching TV and movies, and she also slept at the foot of my bed. There's this great big emptiness now where she used to be, and my heart is crushed. I'll admit I haven't been very motivated to do much of anything lately, including creating cards. On top of that, the holidays are here (perfect timing to have your heart broken, right?), so I'm also dealing with traveling, cooking, Christmas decorations, poor weather, and shopping.

I hope to have something up soon, but it still might be a little while. Please be patient and I'll resume working on cards when I get a chance. May your holiday season be far, far better than mine...

Best,

Jackalwere

Now Requiring Word Verification for Comments

I've been getting an increasing number of spam comments lately, so it's time to implement word verifications when you leave comments. I'm not changing anything else, you can still leave comments anonymously, I just want to eliminate trying to figure out if people or spambots are leaving the message. I personally can't stand using verifications because they can be so hard to decipher, but in this day and age they are a necessary evil. It's a shame that some few have to ruin things for the rest of us, but the sad fact is there are lots of these kinds of people in the world that care only about themselves.

I hope this doesn't discourage you from leaving comments...if I get negative feedback from you readers I can always turn it off. Just let me know if it gets to be a hassle.

No Time for Guardians...

Sorry folks, all my free time right now is being spent on turning my old house into a rental so that I can get some much-needed money coming in. I have been intermittently working on a couple of new cards, as well as working through the mechanics of Planar Conflict, which I will post sometime during the next couple of weeks.

So get out, enjoy the sun, and check back in a couple of weeks or so....

Taking a Little Break

Hi everyone. I know the blog hasn't been very productive lately, but I've been really busy spring cleaning and preparing for a new roommate to move in. I'm also preparing for another trip to Orlando, this time to swim with dolphins & whales, in addition to Disneyworld and Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure (Harry Potter village is so awesome!). I'll try to get a few more cards posted before leaving for my trip. Thanks for hanging in there!

Mounting a Comeback

Ok, so maybe I was a wee bit optimistic in my last post. But the cast is off, I'm wearing a splint, and entering the physical therapy phase. I have a pretty good range of motion already, I can write and type a bit with the hand now. Painting is maybe a week away. I had some downtime to work on new ideas and so next week you should see something new...

A Little Good News

Finally something positive. After meeting with the surgeon this past Tuesday, it looks like I'm getting a plate installed on my wrist this coming Tuesday (the 31st). Within 3-4 days I should have full range of motion back in my wrist. That means a little over a week from now I may be able to type with both hands again, and possibly even paint. It also means I'll be on painkillers for a few days, so there won't be any new posts for a few days after the surgery.

Again, thank you for your support. You all have been great!

A Little Setback

Well, 2012 has started out the way 2011 ended - crappy. I'm sitting here typing with one hand because I broke my wrist today. Tomorrow I have to schedule surgery. The bad thing is it's the hand I paint with in Photoshop, so I won't be able to work on cards. I did have 2 or 3 more done, so I'll post those. It would be a good time to type up some card analysis, but my typing is so slow with my left hand. I'm trying to keep my spirits up, but it's very depressing. The good news is that when I fell off the roof, I didn't damage my back, neck or head, so it could have been worse.

I'd like to once again thank my blog followers for their support. I'll be around in one form or another.

p.s. It took me 5 minutes to type this up. Not great, but not bad...

Looking Forward to a New Year

Well folks, the second half of 2011 really sucked for the blog due to nice weather, mold infestation in my house, my back injury, and the holidays. I lost a lot of momentum as the #1 place where people come to get brand new Guardians content.

My back is almost healed, and being nearly pain-free is invigorating. I'm dedicating 2012 to bringing more content to the blog, including more cards, tutorials, and variants as promised. I had proposed some radical ideas for my next expansion, including co-op play, but I'm backing off that for now...I think that's better suited for a variant. I'm just going to add a couple of small ideas instead and go from there. By the end of the week I'll have the first new card up.

If you didn't abandon the blog despite the lack of content, cheers to you and thanks for your support!

Update on New Cards

Sorry that I haven't followed through on new cards yet. I injured my back a over a week ago and I'm still healing. I haven't been mobile enough to use my computer much, I've mostly been laying around taking painkillers and visiting the chiropractor. I'm feeling as little better today, and hopefully I'll recover in the next week and get some things going.

New Cards In The Works

Some of you have expressed interest in my creation of a new set. I have the artwork nearly completed for about 20 cards so far. I will still be sticking to original artists, except for a few of my personal favorites that will be used as well. This will be similar to Champion's Odyssey, in that I have artwork and need to design card text around the art.

The symbol I'm going to use for the set is Cyrillic and looks like a sun:

The first card should be posted in about a week...

I'm Back!

The weather has taken a turn for the worse lately, it has become cold and rainy. What better time to jump back into Guardians? I'd like to thank you all for your patience...I went all out on this blog for 2 years and really needed a long break to recharge. Now I'm ready to dive back in. A few thoughts/ideas about direction:

  • I may have gone as far as I can go with C.J.'s .sig cards...I have a funny feeling that I'll never find the artwork needed to bring the rest of those outlandish cards to life. But I'll keep looking.
  • On a related note, it's time to get hi res versions of .sig cards up in Google Docs for everyone to download.
  • My previous card creation tutorial only focused on creatures - I'd like to do a couple of tutorials on Terrain, Spells, and Items.
  • A whole new card set of (hopefully) 100 cards, with set name TBD.
  • Another game variant.
  • Thoughts about Drifter's Nexus cards.

It's good to be back!

Taking an extended break

Hey everyone, just taking a nice long break for awhile. I've got a couple of side projects going on which are sucking up all my time. Give me a couple weeks, I'll try to have some new stuff up by then....

Thanks for your patience!

Outrageous Prices for Necropolis Park

There was an auction on eBay that ended yesterday for 26 booster packs of Necropolis Park. The auction went for $86. Wow! I can remember buying a whole booster box for that much...now you get less than half a box for that price. Although I would have liked another McHooter's Distraction, that's too steep for me. I hope whoever won that auction gets an Exploding Tweezle.

Let's just hope the online store Troll and Toad doesn't get any boxes of Necropolis Park...their list price is $300.

Post #300: Buried Treasure Re-discovered

It's hard to believe, but this is post #300. When I started this blog I had no idea I would be taking it this far. For those of you who have been along for the ride, and those of you have recently discovered this blog, thanks for helping me to make Guardians CCG the best blog it can be with your suggestions and insights.

I'll have my second post on Creating Guardians Cards later this week. In the meantime, I made a thrilling discovery today...

Back when I started this blog, in my first post, I talked about winning an auction from Dave Gentzler for a Cheesy Con Souvenir Tweezle. I also remembered pulling an Exploding Tweezle out of box of Necropolis Park boosters. Sadly, those two cards have been missing for years, ever since I packed my cards away in the basement. They weren't with all the other cards - I had put them somewhere "safe". Which meant, apparently, safe from me being able to find them.

Today I was doing some cleanup in the shop and I moved a bookcase out from behind a pile of boxes. Imagine my surprise when I saw the bookcase had a Necropolis Park booster box on it. Now, don't get too excited - the booster box was empty. But next to the empty box was a hard plastic case for card storage. As I opened the case my hand began to shake and a wild elation shot through me. There on the top of the card pile was a Cheesy Con Souvenir Tweezle. Under that was the Exploding Tweezle!

But wait, there's more! I also found a Chaos Summoner promo card and that *blasted* Flame Cannon that I had such a hard time obtaining. Here is a picture of my re-discovered treasures:

It's a great day to be a Guardians player (and collector)!

New content coming, I promise!

I know 3 weeks ago I said I would post more, but that was contingent upon the weather. And the weather, quite frankly, has been worse than terrible. Two weeks ago I received 5 feet of snow in less than 8 hours. I was at work and couldn't get home. I spent 2 nights with friends and another night in a hotel room. When I finally made it home, the power was on and off at random. And it was still snowing yesterday!

Today the sun was out briefly, just long enough to melt most of the snow. The weekend forecast looks good, so I feel like my internet connection is a little more stable. This weekend I'll post a couple of things I've been working on...

Extended break

Sorry folks, just taking a much needed break for awhile. I'll have some new content next week, as long as my internet isn't knocked out by weather as it has been the past week. Stay tuned...

Happy New Year!

I hope your new year is starting off great!

Although I wasn't as prolific in 2010 (129 posts) as I was in 2009 (142 posts), I plan on trying to top both of those numbers for 2011.

If you haven't been paying attention, there are now 10 hi-res PDFs of Champion's Odyssey cards, follow the link in the sidebar. I've run into a slight snag on one card that is holding me up (can't find the Photoshop file), and my internet provider's customer service is down so I can't see how close I am to my upload limit. For now I'll have to upload PDFs from work.

Speaking of work, they got rid of the color laserjet I was using to print cards. The good news is there is a brand new Konica Minolta color copier on site, and cards printed on that look amazing!

More to come...
